Part of the answer is frequency of exposure. Those using AI for technical work encounter it at its best case: it works, it's useful, it compounds their skills. Everyone else gets the mixed bag: impressive one day, useless the next.

But the real driver is media framing. Tech journalism swings between utopia and catastrophe. "AI Will Fix Healthcare" headlines sit next to "AI Doesn't Understand Context" within weeks of each other. This creates a public perception that AI is either revolutionary or useless—no middle ground. Experts know the middle ground is real. They live there.

There's also the job displacement story, which is real enough to shape sentiment but simplified enough in media coverage to create disproportionate fear. Code generation tools will displace some software engineering jobs. They'll also create others. The net effect is unclear—which is the hardest story to tell in a headline. So journalists tell the simpler one: "AI is coming for your job." The public hears that. Experts hear the jobs data and see net employment growth in technical fields despite AI upskilling tools already in the market.

Why does a 50-point trust gap matter for regulation, adoption, and the future of AI?

Trust gaps don't stay gaps forever. They become policy gaps. And policy gaps become investment, hiring, and competitive advantage gaps.

Here's how it works: When the public doesn't trust a technology, governments respond with regulation. Regulation slows deployment. Slower deployment means competitors with looser regulatory environments (China, less regulated US states) move faster. That's already happening in AI.

It also matters for enterprise adoption. CIOs and CFOs don't deploy AI in a vacuum. They read the same headlines as everyone else. If 77% of the public thinks AI is harmful, board members ask harder questions. Due diligence takes longer. Pilot projects get smaller. If experts don't close this gap, the public's skepticism will. And it'll do so through politics, not through education.

Why This Gap May Widen Before It Closes

The 50-point gap is likely to grow in the near term. As large language models get more capable—GPT-5.4 and beyond—the feedback loops diverge further. Experts will see more applications and grow more confident. The public will see more reports of AI mistakes, AI-generated misinformation, and job disruptions, and trust will erode further. This is not inevitable. But it's the base case unless someone actively bridges the gap through education, transparency, and visible guardrails—not promises of guardrails, but guardrails in force.
